Book Contest #1

As I mentioned last week, I've decided to run a series of book contests to celebrate the month of May!

Welcome to this week's book contest!

This week's theme: (S)mothering

This week's contest assignment: Write something about Mothering. (Up to 500 words.) You can either post your entry in the comments here OR on your own blog with a link in the comments here.

Deadline: Friday, May 9, at 11 pm Eastern

What do I mean by "Mothering"? Well, I'll leave that up to you. You may end up writing a tribute to your mother or a mother figure in your life...or perhaps a rant about that figure...you might right a short-short story or poem about a mother, maybe even a sci-fi piece that challenges common assumptions about who/what can be a "mother." Your take can be positive or negative or ambivalent, serious or humorous or ironical, whatever approach you choose.

Choosing the winner: I'll put the names of all the entrants in a hat and pick the winner randomly. The winner will be announced sometime on Mother's Day (US), May 11th.

This week's book prize:
Your choice of either Anita Diamant's THE RED TENT or Stephen King's ON WRITING.

They're very distinct books, but they're both wonderful. And, in my mind, both fascinating glimpses of "mothering." THE RED TENT is very much about the relationships between women, between mothers and daughters. Most people, perhaps King most stridently, wouldn't say ON WRITING has anything to do with mothering. But it's a powerfully nurturing book for writers.

Ready? GO!

Hey, this is a little OT, but I'm partially color blind and sometimes when I read text, portions of it appear to turn red, but it looks like the bold text on this post is both black and red. Can you please confirm or deny? It's driving me crazy not knowing. Thanks.

bt--sorry to mess with your head! Yes, there's bold text in both black and red in this post. Text preceding a colon is in bold black. Text immediately following a colon is bold red.

BT, no she's not sorry. She likes messing with peoples' heads.

(tee hee)

Mine's posted at my blog, but it's 519 words. If it disqualifies me, no worries. I like the piece as it is. :) How cool are you, Precie-pie, for hosting!?!

A mother "joke"

In the South Bay, just south of LA, there is a Catholic Church called American Martyrs. My friends and I joke that on the stained glass windows there are pictures of our mothers.

Oh, my, another contest! Does this explain why you're not entering all the contests over at Chris's place? I just won one in your absence!

I'll mull over this one, too.

Okay, I'm an IDIOT. I.D.I.O.T.

Mine's 519 characters. Only 109 words. Ugh. I'm not changing it, though. My brain is fried. AND I get to go away this weekend! YAY! So I will work on something better for next week's contest.

*mutters to herself, "idiot", slaps her own face, "IDiot."*

Yes Precie. Mckoala took your prize.
heheheh!

There are four more days left! And the contests are much shorter and easier than the one I had over weekend. I think I may have scared a few people away with that one. But certainly I didn't think it would scare away you!!

About your contest, I think I'll let my kids write that entry...

Wheew. Thanks. I still can't see it, but that's a load off my mind knowing the answer.

Yay, a contest!!! I'll see what I can post and link back...

I've already read both books, so leave my name out of the hat - they were both fantastic, too. The Red Tent dripped like poetry - I swear it was the most delicious read I had that year.

Yay! Two entries so far! Woo!

Aerin--shhh. Part of the fun of messing with people's heads is them not KNOWING. ;) (TOTALLY KIDDING!) Thanks for your entry!

Jenna--Thanks for your entry! LOL! I think perhaps I'm an AM-in-training.

McK and Chris--I don't care who writes your entries...you can recruit strangers at the supermarket for all I care. :) Just submit! And sorry I was MIA for the early contests at Chris's blog...I had a busy weekend...moving Beloved's grandmother into an assisted living facility and then taking part in a baby shower for my brother and his wife. I love celebrating babies! :)

Cool contest. I'll have to see what I can come up with. Been in a poetry mood lately. Not sure if that will continue. Thanks for hosting! The Red Tent is awesome.

OK - if I can swipe some time to do this I shall give you a funny mothering story. Or non-mothering story. My mom was not the mothering type. Heh heh.

You know I would have a really funny entry for you but I can't do it because of my ongoing bet. I don't want to fold at the first opportunity even if you bet that I wouldn't last 48 hours. hee hee.

Precie said...

Yay! Another entrant!

Thank you, sarah! I look forward to reading yours!

mck, merry, ello, chris...get to it! LOL!

(McK--I'd even count your soccer boy story as an automatic entry...What a sweet kid! I should be more self-aware...when I'm angry, maybe it's because I haven't had enough hugs recently too!)

And, chris--I hope you've noticed I've participated for 3 days straight now!

Hey, Precie--I want to send you a Don Quixote picture I found. Can you send me your email? Mine is susan dot adrian @ yahoo.com. Thx!

Precie said...

Golly gee, Ms. A! I can hear ya all the way over here! :)

I promise I will announce the winner sometime on Sunday, May 11th. (It's still only 11 pm Saturday here. And, no, I'm not posting it within the next hour. A gal's gotta sleep.)

I'll announce the winner tomorrow and the next contest on Monday. :)

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there!!!
